The resistive touch screen is the most common POS touch screen technology and it was developed over 10 years after the development of capacitive technology. It is made with a stiff bottom layer and top layer made of glass. The POS touch screen works on pressure of your stylus, pen, finger, or anything to physically interact with the screen. Pressure comes in between the current and signals the system to work on the area where it is touched. 

You can easily use a resistive touch screen wearing gloves in cold conditions or when health regulations or workplace safety is the prime concern. However, resistive screens don’t support sharp objects as they can damage the external surface. 

Capacitive Touch Screen 

It was creative in the 1960s and it was the first touch screen display technology. It uses your ability to work as an electric conductor. One glass panel has conductive material within. When the screen is touched, the electrical field is disrupted and a lot of processors signal the system about what system has to do next. 

Surface Acoustic Wave or SAW

These displays don’t have any conductive coating or metal. They have ultrasonic waves reflected by reflectors and transducers. When you touch the glass, it absorbs a part of the wave and detects touch. This POS technology offers great clarity and is also very sensitive to impurities and costly. Any oil or dirt can slow down the response time. 


This technology has been very popular among larger devices. A grid of LED beams is used in vertical and horizontal patterns for enhanced accuracy. It is known to have a very durable screen compared to a capacitive screen. It doesn’t need any conductive coating or surface. Keep in mind that dust and dirt can affect the functionality of the device.
